Today The techjamaican’s convened

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Today “techjamaica” had a little event. The turn out honestly was way less than I expected but a good turn out non the less I guess.  I saw a few people I knew all was well. I was really busy to be honest so I was in and out of the event on my own personal business.

The main highlight of the event was the owner’s / creator’s speech. Quite interesting. Most of what he said was for the most part accurate. I’ve learnt quite a few things at my current place of employment relative to internet users, When they complain listen. forget about how you see it working and try to adhere to there needs and wants. Your community is based on well… your community. Your worst user is  your best asset (worst being the one you are annoyed of because of his constant complaints, there is bound to be some just underlying reason for his concern and revolt) and, do not be afraid to utilize technology available to you, The ui for the “tech portal of jamaica” is extremely outdated looks played out and utilizes’s no up to date technology from a user experience perspective. Remember the users’s care less about what your running on the backend its all about how it feels when using the website.

moving on from that However theree were a few key things that I had to laugh at were.

I believe in specialization. Specialize in what you do and stick to it. A lot of people are getting into a lot of things that they need not necessarily get into. Not because it was successful for me it doesn’t mean that you can do it.

I thought about it, I thought about it and i thought about it. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that they always mean others well before I say anything negative.

Now Who are you to say what others can and cannot, should and should not do. I understand the logic of running the risk or watering down or thinning away one’s talent / competence by venturing into territory they may not understand. What you should ask your self however before jumping to ridiculous conclusions is:

  1. Do they see something I’m not seeing.

  2. Could I be doing something better than I currently am.

  3. Have I attempted other strategies that may be more democratically implemented

However the man clearly knows everything so anything else other than what he said is probably out of the question. Internet communism at its best.

He made a statement about “greed” and how people are just venturing into various projects with money at the core of the efforts. Speak not what you do not know and understand. You know nothing of what drives people. Many people are disgruntled with how things are handled within the techjamaican community. Similarly to how Jamaicans are disgruntled with what is taken place within the country politically. Based on your logic its wrong for another party to analyze the community, Create their own based on your weakness’s and strength and try  in the best possible way to give users what they need / ask for. So technically one party should reign forever in whatever the field it is they are in.

Your delusional and kind of closed minded. Wake up. I will not stop doing what I’m doing. I’m not trying to be rude to anyone but I just cant seem to fathom what right someone has to tell another to Stop based on the premise of I was doing this first.. if this was the case cable and wireless would still have Jamaica under technological oppression where communications are concerned. If I get banned from a site over this this further proves my point. This is my point of view and I have the FREEDOM to express it if i desire to.

Its been a while since i’ve made an open source contribution. This feels good

My weekend for the most part was spent working on tech.in876.com. N i noticed a little issue that shortly after picking up on it woulnd’t sstop annoying me. The post count for child board / child forums weren’t there.  so you wouldn’t knwo if any post is in a sub forum without looking.

I decided to look at the table structure for the forum component and then mathed out the logic and queriess to get the topics to work. Fell asleep on it last night and commpleted it within 1 hr after i woke up this morning. With the topic count working it was just a matter of modifying my custom queries to get the replies to work.

After completeing it i went over to the developer forums and posted the fix. Hope it helps them. The fireboard forum component for joomla is really nice. If everyone contributes maybe we can stop worrying about briding vbulletin with a joomla powered site. Lets take fireboard to their level.

And remember fireboard is Free

Here’s my fix for the child board topic and reply count

The Weekend in review

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Friday was a bit different. loved it though. Had lots of laughter. saw an old fiend from work thats off doing much better in life that he ever was when he was not self employed. Gives me hope yknow. Had a great time at Rodney’s arms (seafood place in portmore) the night sea are was great, especially with how the time raaas hot star, that was well needed. Was there from about 9 till 1 am. Woke up early on saturday morning and did my internet rounds. Then left home to go help a friend make some teasers for a website he’s promoting. I almost cutmy finger off when cutting the teasers with the giollotine, trust mee.. it took my finger nail off clean n like a milimeter more n that blade would have seared through my flesh..

After the teasers were finished. I left there n link up with ma bredrin linkin. Nigga was in halfway tree with him roller blades dashing round the place. Close to the portmore bustop. Him and a yute on a bmx stunt bike acting like they all cool. Great opportunity i figured, and gave em some stickers to tag the place with while they skated to new kingston.

Rest of the day never use to do nothing too tough still. So I worked on my photography site, Anime Site, and reviewed my friends projects events.in876.com, business.in86.com and tech.in876.com (this one is gonna be huge trust me).

Now to prepare for the work week. Be strong

Damn it man..

So its not a biggie but our server re-compiled today. The cracker that did the compile isn’t extensively familiar with linux. Not as much as he used to anyway. So some things that really and truely are simple him might not rmemeber to do. The cracker rebuilt apache n clearly a new conf file and ini file for php got built. the built excluded the gd.so extension so all usage of imagecreate from jpg png or gif are failing.. and a few of my sites look like shit at the moment because of unsighly errors msg’s. its reallys imple to fix but the cracker taking him own sweet time. Its good that i dont have special abilities cause i’ld do mean things. I’ld teleport smack him upside the head fix it then get back to work… dammit man.. unsightly errors that reveal my server paths.. well a gone comment out things till it get fixed.

the old nokia 6111 drama

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

I had a nokia 6111 a few months back. a neat little phone. slider camera video recorder. nice. very sleek phone. It had a flaw though nokia built the phone stupid. The slider springs can easily cut the ribbon that attaches the screen to the board. That is exactly what happened to mine and quite alot of other people.

Anyway i ordered a replacement ribbon from ebay all the way from china. I thought i was ripped off because 2 months had past and I hadn’t gotten the damn thing. 3 maybe 4 months later i get a package.. the stupid ribbon. I still have the hpoen in a ziplock  bag but its missing a part that i sold (the friggin screen). How upsetting. (Roaaaaawwwrrr).

but its fine i still plan to sell it as parts. But lesson learn from all this dont buy it from china unless you got all the time in the world
