I answerd you above. you can do it manually or you can let it be done automatically. I did the shots with both.. auto focus first and then manual after.

how does it know what to focus on? do you select the focus distance or does it automatically select the closest thing?

The lens does have autofocus. But i use a mix of both.. auto to get close to. and then mmanually fine tune till i have exactly what i want.
