Dvd Mayhem in jamaica.
Things aren’t that great for the folks in the dvd business in jamaica. Bootlegging has gone to limits that it has never seen before. Everybody is selling illegal dvds. On my way to work this morning i counted 11 dvd vendors on the street side each having what looked like over 200 dvd’s thats approximately 2200 illegal dvd movies for sale. These guys are selling for 100 - 150 per copy. They are seriously nawing their way at the profits of the industry.
Proof, ViewersChoice2000 is now a dead entity. The company closed down shop and sold out all its dvd’s in house. Today is the final day of the sale. I copped a crap load of anime from them last week saturday :).
The RIAA might really be making a trip to us soon. But thats right after they’re finished with the pirate bay captain.

Yuh know seh I was gwine blog about this because I don’t know how they can empirically state that the decline in business for them, indicates a rise in bootlegging. Yes, bootlegging exists but to what extent. Here is some logic I would present:
- The majority of people who rent DVDs may be in the mid to high socio-economic bracket
- These same people have access to alternative LEGITIMATE DVD rentals…..like iTunes etc.
- The online prices are quite competitive as one can rent an online move for US$2.00 for up to 30 days!! Imagine that….
So why do we blame it PRIMARILY on bootlegging…It’s simply Globalization at work…..

I disagree still. Bootlegging heavily contributed.
1. viewerschoice2000’s primary if not only location was all the way up Hope road way out off the way for anyone that doesn’t live in the mona area.
2. Bootleged dvd’s provide easy accessibility. They are right there on your way home and you have up to (11 i counted this evening) 11 choices of who to buy from. Some times they even walk around selling them so it can technically come to you
3. The netpenetration in jamaica is on the increaes yes However the ecommmerce aspect is still extremely low. Therefore the itunes Rental you speak of is highly unlikely.

Ok…good point…I guess because I wouldn’t buy bootleg why I probably didn’t realise….I mean why buy when you can get the movie from say Limewire etc…for FREE!! However, I have decided to give in and rent from iTunes occasionally…

Ok, forgive my ignorance. Ja. Girl, what do you mean, rent movie for 30 days. You download it, don’t you? And if you have it, what happens after 30 days, does it stop showing? I’m not sure I understand. Also, how does this whole ITunes thing work, do you have to join, become a member? You know something? $2 a movie is less than I rent them from the local blockbuster or monster video for and thats just for 2 or three days. I’m going to have to investigate this further.

Bootlegging is seriously on the increase, especially in Jamaica where we don’t like to pay for anything! It rough pon Viewers Choice still.

Aw crap. Viewer’s Choice is dead? Too bad. Was a good store from what I heard. Jamaica needs to take a harder stance on movie piracy, and do more than the occasional roughing up of vendors.
