Beryl fix for shift and backspace bug

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

There’s a nast bug with beryl i think its more a bug with xgl-server. when the combination of shift and backspace is pressed it kills the gnome session and returns me to gdm’s login screen This is what i used to fix it

xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"

type that in your terminal and hit return and your done

finally i got over beryl

Finally i have beryl up and running here’s how i did it all manual no simple install script

beryl-project Before going there you gotta ensure that you got the proper video card drivers installed.. if your an ati person like me, you’ll need to get the linux ati drivers from ati.amd.com Then from there proceed to the beryl project site for the beryl install instructions and patches.

Here’s a nice overall of how to set up ubuntu linux from scratch on a dell inspiron 6400

hmm the beryl battle begins

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

So yknow i wanna get beryl up and running on my freshly formated ubuntu book.. however its never easy when you got ati technology apparently.. Did the easy setup script but i’m only greeted by failure on booting.. The latest kernel doesn’t work with the drivers apprently.. when i boot up i get some odd vibes for xorg. so i replaced the new xorg.conf witht he backup that was made by the beryl script.. I still need to figure this out, cause i want it.

ndiswrappered wifi on ubuntu linux

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

had to blog this. every single time i format. i gotta search the internet for working instructions of this thing.. sick and tire of that so here it is

Code: sudo make
Code: sudo make install

If all goes well ndiswrapper will compile and install ndiswrapper.ko into /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/misc/ with no errors.

7.)NOW run:

Code: sudo ndiswrapper -i /home/frog/windowsdriverfolder/bcmwl5.inf

8.)Verify installation:

Code: ndiswrapper -l

This will return:

Code: bcmwl5 driver installed, hardware (14E4:4324(this numbering may vary) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)

This is OK.

9.)Now do the following step by step:

A.) sudo depmod -a

B.) sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

C.) sudo ndiswrapper -m

D.) sudo kate /etc/modules (use your chosen text editor here with root access of course.)

E.) add “ndiswrapper” at the end of file followed by a carriage return.

F.) After this it varies depending on Ubuntu variant, but for Kubuntu do:
if your a linux person you’ll know what commands to substitute to get that working in gnome ubuntu

Mplayer you bitch how you like the fullscreen now.. hahaha

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Yo i been having issues with mplayer like for ages now the only way i could get the damn thing to go fullscreen is by using the opengl codecs which when fullscreen began to play the videos choppy and out of sync.. well i did a bit of googing and found that if checked the mplayer.conf files i would have been able to just enable zooming :( yes i’m so embarrassed it should have been apparent from loooong time. ne way for future reference to fullscreen your mplayer all you gotta do if it doesn’t work by default is

sudo gedit (or vi or your fav text manip prog) /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

look for zoom=yes and uncomment it

save and bam your good to go.

Funs over people.. Schools in.

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Monday was my first day of school. so far.. i must say.. very lame, lets hope it gets better. Monday was some management behavioural theory class. anybody that really knows me knows i’m not 100% into that kind of stuff. However I’m gonna make my best effor to pay attention and without a shadow of a doubt pass. Lets back it up a bit though to immediately before my first class. I went up there on monday afternoon and asked to speak with the program co-ordinator for my bsc in IT degree re me recieving a late call 3 weeks into the semester to pick up my acceptance package, long and short of it is she wasn’t having me in the program at this time.. “its too late sir registration have already been closed off” I on the other hand was adamant on the fact that i MUST start school now, I’ll make up for what I have missed on my own time, I cannot sit out another year. After about 15 minutes of this she finally let out a sigh and said. “Alright.. i’ll let you in.. against my gut feeling”. I showed gratitude and said she wouldn’t regret it, I”ll make the school loook good :D.

Now for my class.. hmm i dunno.. I know 1 person in the class i was kinda hoping a i knew non.. I perform better scholastically with strangers.. (no one to converse with). There are about 3 girls in the class that picked up on my interest radar immediately (no names you shall hear from these fingers :p). Lets see how that goes If i’ll be blogging about any of the 3.

My Shedule - I have classes on mondays, tuesdays, and thursdays (thank God today is wednesday = go home and sleep). work stops for me at 4:30 provided there isn’t an emergency or some script that i was working on that i just cannot leave as is. School begins at 5:30, the distance could be traverse in 1 hour. However factor in jamaican traffic and you get an impossible task of being early for school. So far I’ve been late for my first 2 classes and i figure this might be a trend that I can do nothing to change.

Another thing that I have taken up on my head again is my Lpi certifications (linux professional institute certification of system administration). I have got a new book.. (chm file of course) and i’m thinking of buying the real thing on amazon or get some one to buy it for me (do i hear any offers: email me :D). Lpi has nothing to do with my job function but its personal I just want it, Linux has impacted on my life and how i do things in quite a few ways hence the reason for my complete switch from microsoft technologies to opensource technologies (linux - flavor of preference debian based Ubuntu). I really wish my pocket pc was linux based too but whatever i guess.

A few things that i need to figure out with my current linux book (ubuntu on my dell e1505 notebook) setup are:

  1. Ipod syncing - Yes I’m aware of gtkpod however it doesn’t work well for me.
  2. ttys - multiple displays meaning ctrl + alt + fx (fx being f1,f2,f3 through f7) each displaying a different x server where you can run different sessions simultaneously.. sadly only the default f7 works.
  3. multimedia card reader - my card reader will not pick up anyting but sd cards no mmc, no memory stick , no xd
  4. Samba - I need to clear my samba files or probably do a full re-install of it. There was some curruption done by me :( the last time i configured it so right now there’s not much networking going on with my system from the stand point of someone trying to see me on a network (i can see em just fine). I think is the samba pdc Db that i need to re do.

Frostwire Fix the ubuntu files

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

I did a blog entry a few months back about how to setup up frostwire (lime wire like p2p app ) under linux distro ubuntu dapper drake. see post here.

Now that wont completely work but its 90%. you should get an error looking like this

runFrost.sh: 44: Syntax error: "(" unexpected (expecting "}")

of the work the rest is just a quick edit changing the method the application is invoked. do this by changing

#!/bin/bash
cd /usr/lib/frostwire
bash runFrost.sh

thanks to artemis of ubuntu forums i was able to get this working quickly without much of a headache.

I’ve started blogging little stuff like this because it saves me alot of time when i wanna redo my system.. the lamp how to definatly saved me the other day. (see post here). for that lamp how to please add in php5-gd totally forgot to do that the last time.
