My FVWM Experience.

Fvwm screenshot

FVWM is a desktop enviroment for the unix/linux operating system. very light weight ahd very highly / extensivly customizable. i

mean you can do whatever you want with it down to every single T of how it looks and behaves.. this is both its winning and losing point in my book. because you have sooo much controll it is sooo dificult to conifgure. However with 1 sleepless night a morning of cussing my self and fvwm for letting me not slseep the previous night sleepign on the wway home i have finally solved my problems and have my fvwm enviroment looking all kewl.. here’s a little sreenie

N.B i did not make thiss config from scratch i just made little changes here and there, the entire config would take me ages. i haven’t go tthat time for that at all.

Attemping Vmware setup

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

So i’m definatly going for it. a Vmware setup to allow me to install a few other operating systems to run from within my ubunu linux  6.0.6 lts setup. I’m gonna run windows and mac if i can afford to. one on each viewport should make things feel like i’m really using 3 different systems. buti only plan to use linux and the respective os’s for their respective reasons windows for silly things that i hate but must do like flash. andmaybe if i must use dreamweaver to do something cause nvu is kinda crappy at times.

wish me luck will post the results ina  few minutes

Upgraded my Iriver T30 from MTP to UMS

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I bought this semi cool mp3 player the iriver T30 and i honestly loved it upon till the point wwhen i just started using linux and i pluged it in and nothing happend. I realized that i madde a big mistake in researching the device i didn’t check if it was plat form dependent.. the damn thing was dependent on windows media player or it would not work. if media player 10 was not present on the machine then you could not sync mp3s to it it would not even pick up the device at all.

My resolution was to sell the device and purchase a flash based mp3 player maybe a sansa or a muvo but then i got wind of a firmware upgrade software directly from iriver that allows conversion from MTP to UMS (USB MAS STORAGE - just like a thumb drive).

Finally did it at work today as i have no computer running any microsoft anything… :) on disconnecting the device it said please do not touch installing new firmware it rebooted i pluged it in to my nix book and bam there it was. So now i’m good to go.

Ontop of that my dear sister offered me an ipod (shufflel) but still its an ipod and its free so I accepted should be getting it some time next month.

Gnome-Power-Notification not recieving acpi events :(

Monday, September 25th, 2006

I realized it last night my battery led on the notebook began to blink and i checked the power remaining from the gnome-power-notification package which i will refer to as g-p-n from now on.. and it said 100% i’m like wtf is going on.. did a few checks and restarted still nnothing it always starts with the corret notification tho meaning if it is plugged in it starts showing that it is plugged in or starts saying its charging and if its plugged out its starts showing its running on batteries and the actual life of the battery but it doesnt recieve any updates after that to make changes to the g-p-m status in the panel.. :( i dont think i did a hal upgrade recently and i remember having a problem where my system dbus and or hald, where they started after my g-p-n i fixed that by putting the dbus shell exec command in my session startups and it worked perfetly..

So referring to my previous problem i proceeded to remove the dbus shell exec comand or rather disable it…. It solved nothing… So I still need to figure it out..

here’s my terminal output from lshal -m with the power unplugged.
—————————————
acpi_BAT0 property battery.remaining_time = 7171 (0×1c03)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.charge_level.rate = 23776200 (0×16acbc8)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.charge_level.current = 47363700 (0×2d2b674)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.voltage.current = 12032 (0×2f00)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.reporting.rate = 2142 (0×85e)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.reporting.current = 4267 (0×10ab)
then i put the power in and bam

acpi_BAT0 property battery.voltage.current = 11937 (0×2ea1)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.reporting.rate = 0 (0×0)
acpi_BAT0 property battery.reporting.current = 4249 (0×1099)
acpi_AC property ac_adapter.present = true

ps

you know anything leave me a comment. thanks.

Frostwire + j2re + ubuntu = p2p paradise

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

So you just did your ubuntu install and you setup your favourite media player be it amarok for you kubuntu people or xmms or bmpx (bad ass player) and your there twiddling your thumbs wondering whats wrong i know whats wrong.. theres no music to play jackass… this is wha tyou do

pull up a terminal:

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-bin

when thats done you download the forstwire deb package for ubuntu from frostire.com

back to the terminal:

sudo dpkg -i  Froswire-x-x-x-ix86.deb

then after that you wanna configure your java by doing this in the terminal:

sudo update-alternatives –config java

select the 3rd option and in case they decide to move something around your looking for the number that corresponds with this :  /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/bin/java

aftere that you should be able to start frostwire and download at your hearts content.

lamp serverGood idea bannedampBad Idea
if your a web developer and your running a linux distro your definatly gonna need lamp. I hope in this day and age your using some kind of repository to install your apps but if your a from source install guy or girl thats cool.. for a basic lamp setup you will need

for apt get peopole sudo apt-get install apache2 php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server
for source poeple find and download the following
apachex

libapachex-mod-phpx

mysql-server

phpx-mysql

phpx (or whatever version will be out at the time)

anything additional you want just pull the module in for it.. example phpx-sybase (mssql db processing) phpx-gd (image processing) etc.

To keep your hands of the cli for mysql and make your life a little bit easier you can download phpmyadmin either from repository or just download the file and extract it to your /var/www dir or if you prefer in your public_html dir if you have enabled the public_html module in apache which would allow you to browse your to your public_html dir in your home folder via appache eg

http://localhost/~yourhomedir/ - this displays the contents of the public_html directory in your home directory so no longer will you need to sudo to add content to your /var/www directory..

another little thing if / when you install apache to enable the public_html module just edit your apachex.conf file which maybe found in your /etc/apachex/ dir. when your finished with your edits restart apache with sudo apachexctl or sudo apache /etc/init.d/ apachex restart ( you may stop it then restart it if you please). if you end up getting a warning saying apache cannot deterine the hostname just add the hostname “localhosts” to your httpd.conf file which is also found in /etc/apachex/

thats all the linux knowlege i feel to share tonight i just thought finish setting up lamp yet again and i ran into those were the issues so i figured.. someone might want help and might stumple across my blog one day :)

The xgl-compiz’d / ndiswrapper wified / ati driven ubuntu powered beast

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

So she’s all set and taco bell chicken wrap kinda (GOOD TO GO) xgl - compiz (wobbly windows) could be a bit smoother but its moving great.. wifi is up and moving pefeclty with ndiswrapper and the drivers are finaly registered as ati.. 64 mb tho. which upsets me but ati non the less.. my next step iss to download vmserver which just finished btw.. what a coincidence. and install xp in ubuntu as a virtual machine for my dreamweaver and flash needs if they ever arise

Good news :D

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

first up i’ld like to say.. i’m really happy that i’m no longer a freelancer for the gleaner but a full time web application developer :). started since monday got my formal acceptance / welcome in tuesday’s department meeting. it feels kinda good.. question is.. bye bye to the days of changing cheques, cant say i miss that.and now my money can actually go in my account.. which i kinda like.. i hate having cash in hand cuase it gets burn up real easily..

another linux and geek good thing is ati rules you all. rules all the gfx cards out there because ati makes proprietory drivers for linux.. so screw you other card guys.. esp crappy ass integrated stupid cards. :p… see ati linux driver pages here

haha haha … :D :) :} :| :{ :( :’( sob*

so here’s a joke that kinda turned out sad, i decided hmm lets installl the real distro i wanted on my laptop today. ubuntu linux dapper drake. did this with no problem so i rebooted and i realized something. there was no windows partition anymore… which kinda didn’t phase me cause i didn’t really put much files back on my laptop most of em are burnt to a dvd so no big deal if i formated again.. however the issue is.. i have no way of connecting to the net but through wifi at home. reason i have a new laptop.. a new mac address and my isp does mac filtering.. so i gotta get thewifi on the notebook up and running or i’m screwed when i go home…. kinda sucks.. wish me luck fellow bloggers/readers.

ps.. dapper drake is even prettier on a brite view monitor

: update:

wifi pwns me

tux wifi

Ubuntu Blowing up. (getting popular)

Friday, August 4th, 2006

no ubuntu is not blowing up people’s laptops your people who just read headers and make up a story of your own.. (shakes head at you people). Its really the most popular linux distro if i do say so my self, since novell bought suse and made it an enterprise based distro it seems its level of popularity has sorta fell ( i still love suse though its really got everything, i’ve never plugged anything in to my suse book (i only have notebooks so i dont say box(pc)). and it never worked.

I love me some ubuntu, it comes in different flavors edubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu (kde environ) ubuntu (gnome environ ftw :p). i’m on my second cup of ubuntu (second distro upgrade i started in breezy badger days and not from the first (warty warthogh) release.

there is only a few and when i say few i mean few things that i cant do in linux that i really can do in windows.

1.

I cant put mp3’s on my mp3 player because iriver is gay and made a pact with the devil (microsoft and mr billgates) so that the iriver T30mx cannot be used on any computer that doesn’t have windows media player 10. i thought all mp3 players were basically flash drive based.. why didn’t i go with the creative muvo i dont know.. :(..

2.

the other thing i cant do as of yet is use my qtek 9090 with my ubuntu setup it is a Pocket PC afterall. I’ve seen some lil talk of it on the ubuntu forums i might take a swing at it after i finally get ifolder up and running. my stressing project at the moment.. a friend of mine.. enigma got his ifolder up and running but the simias server has began bitchin so now no one can log in.. see enigma’s blog
